Plugging In – How to Find Opportunities to Connect with Your Community

One of our core values is the importance of being involved in the community

– and many of our clients feel the same way. Starting local with your own neighborhood is one of the best ways to

impact change on the world. If you have been wanting to get to know the neighbors, start

making a difference in your corner of the world, and feel more connected to your local

community, here are some great ways to get plugged in.

Connect Online

While social media often gets blamed for a lack of connection, it can also be a force for good.

Search on Facebook for local groups, pages, and organizations. Want a short cut? Go ahead

and like our page, as we regularly post about events going on in the community.

You can also search for local organizations on Twitter or other social media networks, they often

have an account that gives more details about events and ways to get involved.

Reach Out to Your Local School

If you are a parent, chances are good that you are already aware of all the things going on at

your child’s school. These are perfect opportunities to meet other parents and make a difference

in your community.

But even if you don’t have a child going to your local school, give them a call or visit their

website to see what opportunities exist. They may be looking for volunteers, reading buddies, or

even have 5k races or fundraisers that you might be interested in supporting.

Ask Around

Word of mouth is a powerful thing, and it truly is a small world. You might be surprised if you

start asking friends, family, and neighbors what they do to meet people and help out in the

community what new things you will discover. And as a bonus, people that are not already

involved might get inspired by your passion.

Start with Big Organizations

Sometimes it can be as easy as finding the local chapter of Boy Scouts, the YMCA, or another

large organization. Do some brainstorming for the causes you believe in supporting, and then

find their website to see if they have a local chapter. If they don’t already, there may be an

opportunity for you to start one as well.

Which One Is Right for Me?

Before you even start your search, it is worthwhile to write a list of ways that you would like to

help or get involved. Are you a runner looking for races? Do you want to volunteer your time? Is

donating money to great organizations a better fit for your life right now?

Think about the things that you love to do, and the ways that you uniquely are best able to serve

your community and use that as your starting point.

And of course, don’t simply do the research – get out and get started! It is always important to

take action on a good idea.

Have An Idea?

One of our favorite ways to get our name out in the community is to be a part of it just like you in

any way we can. Do you know of a community organization doing great work that we should

know about? Leave a comment below or give us a call!
